Case Study Sweden: Electrolux

Determine whether multilingual communication controls are robust enough to prevent financial and reputational risk.
Determine whether multilingual communication controls are robust enough to prevent financial and reputational risk.

Electrolux successfully used the slogan "Nothing Sucks Like an Electrolux" in some English-speaking markets to promote the strength of its vacuum cleaners.

However, in American English, the word "sucks" is commonly associated with something being poor or of low quality rather than simply having strong suction.

The campaign created confusion, weakened the intended brand message and required significant marketing adjustments in international markets.

From an MC³ diagnostic perspective, the business risk was not the wording itself.

An MC³ diagnostic would examine:

  • Were cultural interpretations of the message assessed before launch?

  • Did different English-speaking markets attach different meanings to the same message?

  • Were multilingual communication controls sufficient to identify potential risks before implementation?

  • Could leadership have anticipated the commercial impact of differing linguistic interpretations?

The objective is not to identify an advertising mistake. It is to determine whether multilingual communication controls are robust enough to prevent financial and reputational risk before international campaigns are launched.

Following diagnosis, MC³ strengthens multilingual communication controls, helping organisations reduce communication risk, protect brand value and improve international decision-making.

The next question I would ask is:

Would your global marketing message communicate the same business value in every market, or a different one?
